Flint Monarchs headed to France for FIBA Tournament

'FLINT, MI -- The Flint Monarchs are taking their show to the international stage.

The Monarchs, who have won three straight Global Women's Basketball Association championships, are one of six teams that will play in the 2019 LIGA Mediterranean Cup May 30-June 3 in Toulouse, France.

The event will also feature teams from Canada, France, Portugal and Spain.

“To represent our country, the Global Women’s Basketball Association and play for an international championship is an opportunity of a lifetime,” Monarchs president and general manager Drey Wynn said in a prepared statement. 

“We are truly blessed, inspired and grateful for all the community support over the past nine seasons.”

Before heading to Europe, the Monarchs will open their season Saturday against the Music City Icons in Nashville.

They’re coming off their fifth GWBA title after beating the Indianapolis Bandits 107-69 in last year’s championship game.

This year's roster is led by Flint Hamady product Arlesia Morse, who played collegiately at Marquette and led the GWBA in scoring last season, as well as reigning MVP Crystal Bradford, who played at Central Michigan.

This year's roster also features Brandie Baker of Hamady and CMU as well as Jasmine Thomas of Hamady and Michigan State.

The Monarchs’ home opener is June 15 vs. Music City at Dort Federal Event Center.
