FLINT STUNS ST. LOUIS SURGE 89-80, ADVANCES TO Championship GAME

Flint, MI- The Flint Monarchs stunned the higher seeded St. Louis Surge 89-80 to pull off an upset in the second semifinal game of the Global Women’s Basketball Association (GWBA) playoffs. 

Asia Boyd led the Monarchs with 20 points and six rebounds, Sparkle Taylor registered 19 points and five rebounds, Rachel Hollivay scored 14 points and six rebounds, Brandie (Baker) Cunningham and Rebecca Harris each posted 13 points.

“This was an extremely intense game, after losing to the Surge three times this season we really wanted this win and the Monarchs did not back down,” said Drey Wynn, Acting Head Coach and General Manager.

Sug Sutton and Kelsey McClure both scored 22 points to lead the St. Louis Surge.

Game notes: Flint scored 56 points in the paint, had 13 fast break points, 17 second chance points, biggest lead held was 19 points and there were two lead changes.

Flint will square off against the defending national champions Wisconsin Glo today Sunday August 7 at 2:30 p.m. The championship game will be live streamed on the flintmonarchs YouTube channel.
